Jets Give Up Touchdowns On Six Straight Possessions In 42-10 Loss To Patriots

Some Jets fans may have been concerned that New York might mess up their draft position with an unlikely win over the New England Patriots on Sunday. However, they didn’t need to worry for long, as the Jets were completely outclassed and never realistically in this game.

On the opening possession, Patriots tight end Austin Hooper gave New England the lead on a two-yard touchdown pass from Drake Maye.  After a Jets three-and-out, New England marched 85 yards to extend to lead to 14 on a one-yard Rhamondre Stevenson drive.

Stevenson scored again on a 22-yard pass from Maye on the first play of the second quarter to make it 21-0 before New York finally got on the board with a Nick Folk field goal.

With 3:01 remaining in the first half, Maye found Stefon Diggs for a three-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to increase the lead to 28-3. New England then got the ball back and scored another touchdown on a Maye pass to Hunter Henry with 31 seconds remaining.

In the third quarter, Maye threw his fifth touchdown pass, to undrafted rookie Efton Chism III to make it 42-3 and was able to rest for the remainder of the game.

Breece Hall finally got the Jets into the endzone for the first time when he broke a 59-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter but that was the final score of the game.

Here are the takeaways...

-- It was apparent the Jets were completely overmatched from the start as New England scored touchdowns on their first two possessions. New York offered little resistance as the Patriots had 10 first downs in 14 plays and didn’t even face a single third down. By halftime, they had 344 yards and 35 points, as they had scored a touchdown on all five of their drives.

-- Maye didn’t throw an incompletion until Kyle Williams dropped a pass with less than two minutes left in the first half. His first two passes that hit the ground had previously been negated by Jets penalties. Those were the only two Jets penalties at that point in the game but, despite improving their overall discipline significantly since early in the year, New York still can’t stop committing penalties at the worst possible time.

-- Hall entered the game needing just 46 yards to record the first thousand-yard season of his career and the Jets seemed committed to him seeing plenty of the ball, even though they would struggle to sustain drives. When he broke a 19-yard run in the second quarter, his longest for several weeks, it was obvious Hall was going to reach this benchmark, finally doing so in the third quarter. His fourth quarter touchdown, which was his longest run of the year, gave him his fourth 100-yard game of the year, but his first since October.

-- Undrafted rookie Brady Cook continues to look a little out of his depth at quarterback, as he was easily intercepted by safety Jaylinn Hawkins the first time he attempted to take any kind of downfield shot. Cook didn’t surpass 100 passing yards until midway through the fourth quarter.

-- Punter Austin McNamara’s fake punt completion in the third quarter was a collector’s item, not just because it was a rare pass completion beyond the sticks, but also because it was caught by safety Malachi Moore. The Jets have, of course, gone the entire season so far without intercepting a pass so it was unique to see a Jets defensive back actually catching the ball. New York tried another fake punt a few plays later, but it was swallowed up for a huge loss.

-- The Jets could be even more shorthanded for their final game of the season as the likes of Hall, John Simpson and Qwan’tez Stiggersall left the game with injuries.

Game MVP: Patriots QB Drake Maye

The Jets had no answer for Maye, who left the game midway through the third quarter having already completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and five touchdowns. All six of New England’s drives with Maye at the helm ended with a touchdown, as he made picking apart their decimated secondary look effortless.
