Jets Look Dramatically Improved In Season-opening Win At Titans

The new-look Jets got their season off to a convincing start with an impressive road win over the Tennessee Titans. Breece Hall rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown as New York outgained Tennessee in total yards, 367 to 195, and cruised to a surprisingly easy 23-10 win.

The Jets got off to a great start as they took their opening drive 60 yards. It was a drive that ended on rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq's short touchdown run.

Tennessee's only scoring drive of the first half saw it forced to settle for a field goal, but the Jets leaned on their running game as they responded with a 19-play drive to restore their lead on a Jason Sanders field goal and led 10-3 at the half.

New York extended its lead to 17-3 early in the second half on Hall's short touchdown run, which came after Geno Smith's deep connection to Adonai Mitchell. By the start of the fourth quarter, they had extended their lead to 20-3 on Sanders' second field goal of the game, and his third made the lead 20 with five minutes remaining.

Tennessee added a late touchdown against a prevent defense when Cam Ward connected with Elic Ayomanor for an 11-yard score.

The Jets look to be dramatically improved, but are they the real deal or did they just get to take advantage of a rebuilding Tennessee team that is overmatched in this phase of their development? Time will tell.

Here are the key takeaways…

- As is often the case in the season opener, the Jets had to deal with a few injuries. New safetyMinkah Fitzpatrick's Jets debut lasted less than a quarter due to a groin injury, and then the Jets lost another defensive back when Jarvis Brownlee suffered a hamstring injury but was able to return. On offense, rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper was carted off with an early ankle injury. He set up the opening touchdown with a spectacular catch and run, but that ended up being his only contribution.

- The last time the Jets scored a touchdown on their opening drive of a season, Smith was still on the roster in his first go-round with New York -- albeit as a backup. Frank Reich's offense operated effectively, consistently picking up small chunks of yardage even though they didn’t throw downfield that often. Garrett Wilson led Gang Green with six catches for 79 yards.

- Despite the comfortable win, the Jets still need to work on some things. Penalties, missed tackles and communication issues on offense all held them back at times. One of the biggest negatives was a missed 54-yard field goal by Sanders that wasn't even close. That’s a key area that New York needs a solution for, although Sanders later bounced back by hitting 51- and 52-yarders.

- On defense, the Jets did a good job of getting up the field, although they struggled to finish plays in the backfield and the only turnover they forced was on special teams. Interestingly, on two third downs in the first half, they dropped Will McDonald into coverage, rather than having him rush the passer, and Ward was unable to find anyone. McDonald was unleashed later on, recording a spectacular sack on a sharp inside spin move.

- Rookie David Bailey had a relatively quiet debut, although he was credited with a cheap sack when he pushed Ward out of bounds for no gain on a third quarter scramble. Aside from that, he was credited with three other tackles but rarely beat his man cleanly off the edge, although he did draw a holding penalty at one stage.

- Demario Davis was a standout on defense, leading the Jets with eight tackles and added one pass break-up. One key factor in his return to New York was that the Jets will hope to give up fewer big plays due to defensive breakdowns. Things couldn't have gone much better in that category as the Titans' longest play of the day was only 14 yards, which came with roughly five minutes remaining.

Game MVP: Geno Smith

Smith only passed for 215 yards and didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he provided New York with the kind of steadying influence they desperately lacked at the quarterback position last year.

He completed 19 of 24 passes, including 8 of 9 in the second half, and his two longest completions of the day, to Cooper and Mitchell, were the key plays on their two touchdown drives.
