The Jets have traded defensive end Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. The story was broken by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Trade: the New York Jets are sending DE Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for DT T'Vondre Sweat, per ESPN sources.

I’m sure this move won’t be popular among large portions of the Jets fanbase, but I think it’s a good one. Johnson has had one good season out of four in the NFL. He suffered an Achilles injury in 2024, and did not look like the same guy returning in 2025.

This deal will create over $10 million in salary cap space for the Jets.

Cap ramifications of the trade:

Johnson counts $13.4M on this year's cap; he's in the final year of his deal.

Sweat, a 2024 second-round pick, will count $1.7M on the Jets' cap And he's signed through 2027.#Jets

Johnson also had a contract expiring at the end of 2026 and could be looking at a payday that his play to date just doesn’t justify. I think getting out of the $13.4 million commitment alone makes the deal worth it.

However, the Jets also got a useful player in Sweat. He isn’t a flashy guy. He won’t ever produce monster numbers. He is a quality space eater on the interior of the defensive line, a classic two down lineman. He isn’t someone who will change a defense, but he should be able to give the Jets defense quality snaps.
