Joe Brady’s Promotion Will Need To Buck Recent History To Be Successful

The Buffalo Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady on Tuesday, naming him as the next head coach and replacing his former boss, Sean McDermott. Recent examples of this have not gone well.

Only two head coaches that were promoted since 2000 have a winning record with their teams; Jason Garrett with the Dallas Cowboys and Mike Martz with the St. Louis Rams.

Martz was able to take the Rams to the Super Bowl two years after Dick Vermeil’s retirement, losing to the New England Patriots in Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl in February 2002.

Coordinators are rarely promoted to replace their bosses in the NFL.

The Bills promoted Wade Phillips to replace a retired Marv Levy in 1998 and Phillips had some success. 10-6, 11-5, and 8-8 were his three records as head coach but he went 0-2 in the playoffs including the Music City Miracle. He was the last coach to lead the playoffs before Sean McDermott.
