Jonathon Cooper isn’t the first Denver Bronco to find himself in trouble over an offseason, but he might be one of the dumbest. It takes a special kind of talent to get arrested twice within the same 7-day timeframe. Instead of sports media churning out an endless stream of Bo Nix ankle pieces in advance of mandatory OTAs this week, we now have to write about a host of charges, including a strangulation charge, stemming from an argument with Cooper’s girlfriend.

Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed Cooper’s growth with Denver, especially last season’s run to the AFC Championship game. However, there’s no room on the team for a domestic abuser. George Paton and Sean Payton don’t sift through mountains of draft picks to find character guys only to have a current player prioritize his own selfish antics over the Broncos Super Bowl goals.

Jonathon Cooper has shown that football is secondary to all that the NFL has afforded him. His obligation to the team was seated firmly behind wrestling a cell phone away from a woman a third his size. What could be on that cell phone that was more important than the job that has given him millions of dollars, fame, and notoriety? With the first legitimate Super Bowl run of his career at his fingertips, why would he be so willing to throw that all away? Maybe football isn’t that important to him or he just isn’t smart enough to know better.

Either way, news of Cooper’s arrests are disappointing distractions as the Broncos head into the next installment of offseason work this week. Who knows what the next chapter in this saga will be? A smart person would stay away and let the process play out. However, this is Jonathon Cooper and he has already proven he is not that. So, who knows where where the winds of common idiocy will take him this week and in weeks to come?
