Knicks' Og Anunoby Exits With Concerning Leg Injury: Latest Updates

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks took a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia 76ers in their second-round series with a 108-102 victory Wednesday night, but attention now turns to the health of one of their best players.

OG Anunoby, who had a strong game with 24 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, could not finish the contest due to an apparent injury.

Late in the fourth quarter, Anunoby attempted to cut to the basket when he pulled up and grabbed his right leg, near his hamstring. In the moments that followed, Anunoby remained on the floor and even attempted a dunk when the ball found him down low. But it became clear that he was hobbled by the injury and limped fairly significantly once he tried to jog to the other side of the court. He asked to be subbed out and left the game with 2:31 to play, replaced by backup guard Miles McBride.

Anunoby did not return to the bench for the remainder of the game.

Knicks coach Mike Brown did not have updates for reporters postgame.

“I haven’t talked to anybody,” Brown said. “He looked like he was hopping, but I have not talked to medical yet.”

Anunoby has emerged as a multi-purpose threat for the Knicks in the playoffs and is integral to their title hopes.

Not only has he been tasked with guarding a premier offensive player — on Wednesday night he was the primary defender on Paul George — but he has ramped up his effort on rebounding. He’s also a reliable perimeter shooter, so if he’s forced to miss some time, it would come as a significant blow to New York.

OG Anunoby injury: who would step in?

If Anunoby is forced to miss time, the Knicks have some flexibility to replace him. For one, New York could slide Josh Hart, who plays all over the floor, to fill his immediate assignment. That could free up backup guard Miles McBride to start alongside Jalen Brunson in the backcourt.

Given that McBride stepped in for Anunoby in the clutch of a tight game, logic dictates that he would be the first player up.

New York could also deploy some combination of Jose Alvarado, Jordan Clarkson and Landry Shamet to contribute, or spell McBride once he heads to the bench.

Knicks players react to OG Anunoby's injury

After the game, multiple Knicks players expressed concern over Anunoby, though each indicated that they had not talked to him about the injury or its severity.

Because of that, the general mood among Anunoby’s teammates was one of hesitance to rush to conclusions.

Jalen Brunson: “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. I don’t know too much.”

Karl-Anthony Towns on if his chemistry with Anunoby can be replicated, should Anunoby be forced to miss time: “Yeah, but I don’t have any plans on doing that, so I don’t really know. We’ll regroup (Thursday) and see what the whole situation is and obviously, they’ll give you updates.”

Mikal Bridges: “Yeah, we’ll see what it is, but next man up, that’s really it.”

OG Anunoby stats

In 67 games this season, Anunoby averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Known for being an excellent two-way player and one of the better wing defenders in the NBA, Anunoby has elevated his play in the postseason; over New York’s last six games (including Wednesday night), he’s averaging 23.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and has totaled 12 steals and 8 blocks over that span.
