La Rams Promote Rising Star Nate Scheelhaase To Offensive Coordinator

Nate Scheelhaase, the L.A. Rams' 35-year-old passing game coordinator, is being promoted to offensive coordinator, a source familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the promotion is not yet official. Quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone is being promoted to co-offensive coordinator/QB coach.

Scheelhaase, seen as a rising head coach candidate in Rams coach Sean McVay's coaching tree, interviewed with five teams for their vacant head coaching positions in the offseason before ultimately returning to the Rams. He was seen as a top candidate in Cleveland before the Browns decided on former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

The Rams posted the top offense in the NFL in 2025 and will enter 2026 with reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford back under center.

How Rams offensive coordinator position opened

Scheelhaase is being promoted after former Rams OC Mike LaFleur, the brother of Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur, was hired to be head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in early February.

Under McVay, all four offensive coordinators have gone on to become NFL head coaches: Matt LaFleur (Packers), Kevin O'Connell (Vikings), Liam Coen (Jaguars), and Mike LaFleur.

Scheelhaase is now in good position to join that group, helping McVay helm an offense that helped the Rams to a 12-5 regular-season record and NFC championship game appearance in 2025.

What is Kliff Kingsbury's role in Rams offense?

Kingsbury, the former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator, joined McVay's staff in an undisclosed role in early February, per reports. Kingsbury was not yet listed on the Ram's official coaching roster on Feb. 20.
