Nfl Rescinds Fines Of Ja'marr Chase For 'people's Elbow' Celebration After Wr Argued The League Assumed 'the Worst Of Him'
"The people's elbow" is back. Or, at least it's no longer the subject of the NFL's ire.
The NFL on Tuesday rescinded two $14,926 fines for Ja'Marr Chase after the All-Pro Cincinnati Bengals receiver appealed the discipline of his touchdown celebration from a Week 2 game against the Houston Texans.
Per the letter from the NFL appeals office, as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Chase argued in his appeal that the league is "assuming the worst of him and his teammate without discussion with the NFLPA."
"On appeal, Mr. Chase … further contended that even if he committed the violation, his fine should be reduced because he received no warning that this was not allowed.
"He added that this is a new celebration with his teammate and that it is not offensive. Mr. Chase finally stated that the NFL is assuming the worst of him and his teammate without discussing with the NFLPA."
Here's the celebration that got Chase in trouble. He caught a touchdown against the Texans, then stood up in the end zone and extended his right arm straight down from an angled position.

Chase was fined each time for performing the celebration twice against the Texans. The league reportedly considered the celebration an "offensive gesture" amid internet speculation over what it meant.
The "teammate" referenced in his appeal is wide receiver Tee Higgins, who also performed the celebration and was issued multiple fines by the league.
Chase confirmed the fines after they were reported and told reporters that it was "a wrestling move."

Ja'Marr Chase says he was fined by the NFL for his "People's Elbow" celebration.
"Obviously THAT'S not what it is, but - It is what it is ... It's literally like a wrestling move."

"The people's elbow stuff?" Chase said. "We got fined. … Everybody's gonna have their opinion on what it look like, what it is. They have many people saying what it look like what it is. … Obviously that's not what it is.
"This is where the superstars have to get in with the NFLPA and fight for our money. … I'm getting fined for an elbow and doing a first-down thing. I can't really do much about it.
"We can complain — I don't even think we can tweet about it, 'cause we get fined for tweeting about it. It's really like players gotta keep their mouth shut and deal with it. We've got to have a superstar in the NFLPA to do something about it, help us along the way."
Higgins further explained the celebration during an appearance with Kay Adams' "Up and Adams" show. Per Higgins, it's a nod to The Rock's signature wrestling move "the people's elbow" from when Dwayne Johnson was a WWE superstar.

"I'm a fan of the WWE. You know who The Rock is, right?" Higgins said. "The people's elbow. We just threw in a first-down celebration with it. … Everybody on the internet is making it seem something that it isn't. It is what it is."
It wasn't clear on Tuesday if Higgins' fines have also been rescinded. Nor was it clear if the tandem will revive the celebration moving forward.
The Bengals have a bye week coming up for Chase and Higgins to figure it out ahead of a high-profile AFC North matchup against the rival Ravens on Oct. 25.
