Nike Muscles Into Hyrox-led Fitness Racing Boom

The Swoosh is embracing the hybrid-fitness boom with its first shoes built for Hyrox-style racing, teeing up fresh competition with established players like Puma

Nike is betting on the fitness-competition boom, moving in on the growing market with the launch of its first shoes designed for hybrid training, the Nike Hybrid line.

While Nike is known for its running shoe innovations — credited as the first brand to pioneer carbon-plated racing shoes — the move enters the brand into new athletic territory and pushes others to compete with their own innovations.

The activewear giant crafted two new shoes to meet the unique demands of training for and fitness-racing events like Hyrox and ATHX.

Just as long-distance runners have multiple shoes for training and racing, Nike has created a shoe to accommodate day-to-day hybrid workouts, and another designed to optimize race performance.

The Nike Hybrid RN is specifically designed for training, with technology that secures the foot during transitions and a robust outsole for optimal traction across multiple surfaces.

Its second shoe, the Nike Hybrid Fly, combines the brand’s trademark lightweight foam with a carbon fiber plate — both of which can be seen in its popular road racing shoes — along with a wider base to ensure stability and traction as athletes quickly transition between stations.

Nike has also added in race lockdown laces, four-zone traction with sticky rubber and sidewall wraps to help maximize grip, durability, structure and foot security through dynamic movements across varied surfaces.

The sportswear giant sponsors several professional hybrid athletes, some of whom wore prototypes of the Fly during this year’s world championships.

“Hybrid asks a lot more of a shoe than road running does,” said Nike-sponsored hybrid athlete Lauren Weeks, a 2026 Hyrox Doubles World Champion. “You’re constantly switching between running and strength movements, so it makes sense to wear something solely designed for both. Having a shoe that can handle those demands lets you focus on your race or training instead of thinking about your footwear.”

The move could challenge other brands like Puma, a key Hyrox partner, which creates specialty footwear and apparel for the hybrid competition. Last year, the footwear brand announced an early extension of the partnership until 2030.

Nike is beginning to roll out the new shoes this fall, launching the Nike Hybrid RN in China on September 24 before becoming available globally on October 8 online and in select retail locations. The Nike Hybrid Fly will launch globally in April 2027.
