Notes: Former Lions Wide Receiver Announces Retirement After 7 Seasons
Former Detroit Lions wide receiver DJ Chark has announced his retirement from the NFL after seven seasons.
Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell signed the 29-year-old in their first season in the Motor City to a one-year, $10 million deal. The Lions had hoped he would give the team a true deep-ball threat, and potentially become the No. 1 outside receiver.
However, an ankle injury sidelined him for six games. He tallied 30 catches, 502 yards, and three touchdowns in 11 games with a 69.6 PFF grade. He spent only the 2022 season with the Lions, signing with the Carolina Panthers the following year, and finishing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024. The Atlanta Falcons released him last August.
Here’s what he wrote in his retirement post on Instagram in full:
“After much contemplation, I have decided to share a proper farewell as I navigate retirement. My journey began at the age of 7 when I signed up for football, unaware of the profound impact it would have on my life. I simply loved the sport and had the unwavering support of my parents. Years later I received the support of my wife, kids, family and thousands of fans!
“As I write this I reflect on the challenges I’ve faced and overcome, as well as the rewards I’ve reaped,” he posted. “I’ve learned to appreciate every experience and not take any of them for granted. As I enter this next chapter of my life, I remain committed to being an active pillar in my community, empowering the youth through charitable work.
“The possibilities ahead are endless, and that excites me. I am grateful for all my teammates, fans, and every organization I have had the privilege to play for. All glory goes to God, I am forever thankful.”
Chark retires with 216 receptions for 3,100 yards and 24 touchdowns in 76 games.
