Open Thread: Carter Bryant’s Guest Spot On The Road Trippin’ Show

I originally saw this yesterday in a dozen cut up tweets (xs…what do we call these, Pounders?). Thank you to Karatestyle who shared the link with the entire interview. It was recorded last month during Summer League and released on YouTube Monday. It’s 34 minutes and 19 seconds long, so…see ya in a little while.

Bryant was introduced by host Allie Clifton as “one of the most genuine ambassadors for this league has for the deaf community.” The Road Trippin’s Show calls itself the “longest running athlete podcast.” Hosted by Clifton, Channing Frye, and Richard Jefferson, their YouTube Channel boasts over 2,000 videos.

Some general observations: Richard Jefferson is wearing sunglasses indoors. He seems a little toasty. When the episode kicks off his beer is already low. My guy @RealSpursnandez can be seen in the background sporting his Spurs belt. If you don;t follow him, get on it.

Another takeaway: For a young guy, Carter Bryant speaks with maturity, humility, and a fair level of self-deprecating humor. He doesn’t bluster, but more importantly, he doesn’t get led into negative tones.

Bryant speaks beautifully about his journey, in particular his first interaction with Devin Vassell which made him question if he even belonged in the NBA. While his appreciation for Gregg Popovich aligns with what others say about the greatest coach of all time, Bryant’s share feels like a friend telling you about a great teacher. It must be amazing to be comfortable in your skin at such a young age. It stands to reason, he’s consistently had familial love and support as he’s carved his path from school to college to the NBA and into the Finals in his first season.

Jefferson, Frye, and Bryant all attended Arizona and spoke at length about their experiences. Frye is cousins with Tobias Harris, who recently signed with the Spurs. Unfortunately, the interview took place before the signing.

The show wraps up with a heartfelt share about Bryant’s involvement with American Sign Language.
