Patriots Owner Says Christian Gonzalez Has History-making Contract Offer

Christian Gonzalez wants the New England Patriots to show him the money. According to their owner, they have.

The standout cornerback is seeking a new contract, and according to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a big payday may be on the horizon.

Speaking at Patriots training camp, Kraft made it clear they value Gonzalez and the team plans to put its money where its mouth is when it comes to a new deal, in a big, big way.

"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person," Kraft said to reporters on July 25. "That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL."

Kraft would add that the deal would also be the biggest in Patriots franchise history.

While the details of Kraft's supposed offer to Gonzalez are unknown, if Kraft is correct, then Gonzalez would earn a deal that's larger than the four-year, $124 million pact that Trent McDuffie inked with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this offseason.

With $100 million in guaranteed money, the deal made McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in league history.

There are other numbers which would be at play: Guaranteed money, incentives, total years, bonuses and more. On face and total value, that would mean that Gonzalez would earn more than the $31 million per season on McDuffie's deal.

Selected with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 24-year-old has been one of the top cornerbacks in the league in the last two seasons. After an injury cut his rookie season short, Gonzalez has played in 30 games, breaking up 21 passes and intercepting two in the last two seasons.

Extension eligible, he's entering Year 4 of his rookie contract and his fifth-year option was picked up by New England earlier this offseason.
