Rams Reportedly Moving On From Kicker Harrison Mevis In Latest Special Teams Change
The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly moving on from kicker Harrison Mevis following his rough start to the 2026 campaign, including a “Monday Night Football” defeat to the Buffalo Bills, in which Mevis went 0 for 2 on field goals and had a potential game-winner blocked in overtime.
Head coach Sean McVay expressed his frustration with the Rams’ kicking game in the aftermath of Monday night’s 37-34 setback to the Bills that dropped the preseason Super Bowl favorites to 2-3. And now McVay’s making his latest special teams change, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
Mevis, a 5-foot-11, 243-pound specialist who was affectionally nicknamed "The Thiccer Kicker” while ascending to All-America status at Missouri, has made only five of his nine field-goal attempts this season.
L.A. is signing Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad, per Rapoport. Grupe entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2023. He caught on with the New Orleans Saints and was their kicker for two-plus seasons before finishing last season with the Indianapolis Colts.
Throughout his NFL career, he’s converted 86-of-105 field-goal attempts, good for an 81.9% clip, with a long of 60 yards. He’s also hit on 96-of-98 extra points.

McVay vehemently criticized his team’s kicking operation at the podium postgame on Monday, emphasizing that it was “not even close to good enough.”
He added, bluntly: “It cost us the game tonight.”
Additionally, McVay noted that he was “going to evaluate everything.”
McVay, a one-time Super Bowl champion in his 10th season in charge of the Rams, lamented his conservative play-calling leading up to the 48-yard Mevis field-goal attempt, which was blocked by Buffalo edge rusher Greg Rousseau.
It’s possible Mevis would have missed the kick even if it wasn’t blocked. He was wide left on a 50-yard attempt late in the first quarter.
