Redemption With A Side Of Reckoning

It has been 250 days since the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers to end the 2025 season with a win over a bitter division rival. It was a tumultuous season that culminated in a shakeup of the entire front office. The 2026 offseason has been all about change and growth. For me personally, this offseason has been one of the more challenging professional journeys I have been on. Two days after the Vikings’ last game of the 2025 season, I received word that the company I worked for was closing my location. We were given three months to not only close a location down to the furniture and random tech junk, but to keep doing business as usual and continue serving our customers until the bitter end. If you work in the corporate world, you know that sometimes there are things out of your control. No matter how much effort you put in, no matter how many coaching conversations you have with your team, it is sometimes not enough.

Much like the corporate world, the NFL is a cold, heartless place. I found myself over the summer sympathizing with Kyler Murray, who was in a similar, but quite different situation. We both seemed to be given the “it’s not you, it’s me” speech by our respective employers. We both hit free agency around the same time and had to find new homes. For me, that involved going through the interview process with multiple companies, one of which required 5 interviews (I didn’t get that job). It took months of searching and coming within days of moving even deeper into the belly of the enemy (southeast Wisconsin).

Luckily, I found my fit locally and instead of having to uproot my family and leave behind everything we built for three years, I was able to land on my feet at a local institution that has great potential, that needed a shakeup to bring in the proper personnel. We don’t get infinite chances, and nothing is certain, so I am going full tilt to make sure I thrive in my role with my new company. For Kyler Murray, he was given an opportunity to resurrect his career with “quarterback whisperer” Kevin O’Connell.

The Last Shot at Redemption

It’s difficult to overcome when people doubt you or you are constantly facing rejection. No matter what happens, though, there is always opportunity for redemption. For me, that is the theme entering the 2026 NFL season.

Careers, pride, and reputations are on the line this season. Starting at the top, Kevin O’Connell is in a “prove it” year where he needs to overcome the reputation of putting together great seasons, only to fizzle out in the first game of the playoffs. The first step taken was to put someone new behind center who, if he can even play marginally better than last year’s quarterbacks, can win games and lead the Vikings to the playoffs.

Kyler Murray’s redemption arc could be an incredible one to watch. He started his career with the Cardinals winning rookie of the year and having nice seasons back-to-back. He has had the opportunity to throw to Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald and prime DeAndre Hopkins. However, since the departure of Hopkins, Kyler has not had the greatest supporting cast and played for a flailing organization that was grasping to keep even an ounce of relevancy in the NFL. In 2026, Murray will be throwing to, arguably, the best wide receiver in football, Justin Jefferson.

It is hard to believe that 2026 will be a “redemption” season for Justin Jefferson, because he is a great player. However, 2025 definitely left a bad taste in his mouth and has people losing regard for him as the best receiver in football. People are forgetting how good he actually is, and I cannot wait to see him go absolutely NUCLEAR in 2026. Now I’m starting to get riled up!

Overcome and Thrive

The unit that most needs a redemption story is the offensive line. Last year’s debacle resulted in some of the worst protection and quarterback play from the Vikings in the last quarter-century. The front office’s spending spree didn’t make much of a difference. Signing Ryan Kelly turned out to be a complete disaster. In retrospect, it was a terrible signing of a player who didn’t have anything left in the tank. The revolving door at center, both in personnel and on game day, could not be more apparent.

This season, the unit comes into the season reloaded and healthy. The smartest strategy the Vikings employed last season was easing Christian Darrisaw back into action and allowing him to hang up his cleats for the season once it was a lost cause. I look for him to come back at 100% and absolutely decimate any defensive lineman or linebacker who crosses his path. Will Fries is also two years removed from a major injury, and if he can return to form, alongside Brian O’Neill on the right side of the line, it is going to be fun to watch. The development of second-year guard Donavan Jackson will be one to closely monitor as well. Please, football gods, let Blake Brandel be the answer at center.

Build an Identity

On the other side of the ball, it isn’t so much a redemption arc incoming as it is a reckoning. A reckoning for NFL offenses that play against the purple and gold. We are about to witness the most Brian Flores defense that has ever Flores(ed) before. That sounded better in my head, but you get the idea. The defensive roster is now completely turned over from the abomination of Ed Donatell’s. This is Brian Flores’ defense. This is the Vikings’ defense. I don’t care if we win every game 6-3. I want to see this defense be the identity of the team and absolutely decimate its opponents. There are so many names of solid players on this defense, and we know it is going to be schemed up in ways that frustrates opposing offenses and renders them ineffective.

From my perspective, I see an intelligent, veteran defense with an injection of youth. We have seen over the past few seasons that rookies are eased into Flores’ system, and I think that trend will continue this year. I can’t wait to see Big Citrus and Caleb Banks in midseason form. Dallas Turner is going to be beastly. My favorite Viking of all time, Harry the Hitman, is back for one final season (never a doubt he was coming back). He is the heart, soul, and brain of the entire defense. I’m so glad he gets one more shot at a deep playoff run. I want every Sunday to be a nightmarish hellscape for opposing offenses, and I think my wish will be granted.

It’s Time!

The struggle bus is making its last stop. It’s time for you, me, and the Minnesota Vikings to embark on a new journey in a freight train of grit and determination. Wear your purple and gold proudly. If anyone asks you what you think of this year’s Vikings, just smirk and say, we’ll see. Not, like, in a cocky way, but more with calm, cool confidence.

We have all worked hard to get where we are in life. Have the confidence in yourself that you can persevere and achieve your goals. Envision the life you want, envision the season you want to witness, and never stop believing in this team. After months of radio silence, I am ready to return as the overenthusiastic and positive Vikings fan. I am so excited to drink the tears of entitled Green Bay Packers fans! The Gjallahorn will be music to my ears and my sign that everything is right in the universe.
