Rip Fredd Young: Seahawks Legend Dies At 64
The Seattle Seahawks have announced the passing of former linebacker, four-time Pro Bowl selection, and special teams standout Fredd Young.
Drafted in the third round out of New Mexico State by the Seahawks in 1984, Young was a Pro Bowler in each of his first four seasons, as well as being named an All-Pro twice—first for his special teams as a rookie, then in 1987 as a middle linebacker.
While being a special teams ace in his first season, Chuck Knox named him a starter at linebacker in his second year. Per the Seahawks site:
“Young led the Seahawks in tackles in three of his four seasons in Seattle, recording at least 100 tackles in a season from 1985-1987. His best season in the NFL came in 1987 when he recorded nine sacks despite only playing in 13 games. He received Defensive Player of the Year votes to go along with a Pro Bowl and All-Pro nomination.”
He was named a Seahawks Legend in 2025, the 50th anniversary of the team.
Young was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round picks, which turned into Andy Heck and (through a trade up) Cortez Kennedy. Injuries led to him retiring from the NFL in 1990 after seven seasons.
Fredd is survived by his wife, Michelle, as well as their children, Jessica, Freddy Jr. Matthew, Monroe, Fenix, Jeremiah and Amirah. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jaysha, Jarah, Jianika, Titus, Cassius, Justus, and Sunday.
