Saints Rookie Wr Jordyn Tyson Facing Lengthy Layoff With Hamstring Injury
Hamstrung by a hamstring.
The New Orleans Saints are set to be without their rookie receiver, Jordyn Tyson, for the foreseeable future as he recovers from another hamstring injury.
Tyson is expected to miss roughly two months, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
The news comes just days after head coach Kellen Moore announced the rookie would miss time. While this hamstring isn't related to the previous injury that plagued him at Arizona State, it is notable that Tyson is already dealing with an injury before making his debut.
It was a concern throughout the draft process, but not enough to dissuade the Saints from selecting him with the No. 8 overall pick.
"Jordyn has a hamstring," Moore announced to reporters in a press conference on Aug. 14. "Something that we're going to continue to collect some more information just as far as what that timeline looks. He kind of got caught in a goofy spot."
Moore added that the way the injury happened would likely have resulted in the same outcome for any other player.
“I think my understanding of this one, any player that was put in his situation where your foot slips and you get shoved from behind, this has nothing to do with Jordyn’s history,” Moore said. “Any player in that situation probably has the same diagnosis coming out of this.”
Unfortunately for the Saints and their fans, it won't help Tyson get back on the field any sooner. Nor will it quiet the concerns that many had ahead of the draft.
Here's the latest on Tyson.
Jordyn Tyson injury update
Tyson is expected to miss about two months with the hamstring injury he suffered in training camp.
That would seemingly push his potential return date into October, putting injured reserve (IR) in play. If placed on IR, Tyson would be sidelined for a minimum of four games.
Saints WR depth chart
The Saints' depth chart at receiver is set to take a big hit without Tyson to begin the season. While it's unclear who will make the roster, here's a look at some of the names that are first or second-string on the depth chart at this stage of the preseason:
- Chris Olave
- Devaughn Vele
- Bryce Lance
- Kevin Austin Jr.
- Barion Brown
Trey Palmer, Bub Means and Mason Tipton headline the other potential options currently on the roster in New Orleans, even if none of them rise to the talent level of Tyson.
Olave, as usual, will shoulder the brunt of the workload for Moore's offense. However, there is no immediate starter-level replacement that can replicate what Tyson was expected to bring to the table.
