Steelers Fans React To Mike Mccarthy Hiring

Mike McCarthy is the fourth Steelers head coach in 57 years.

The Steelers announced on Saturday that the organization has agreed to a verbal agreement with the former Packers and Cowboys coach to guide the franchise moving forward.

Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the deal is for five years.

The news was met with mixed reviews on social media, but primarily with negative feedback from Steelers fans.

McCarthy, 62, defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas and took 2025 off. He coached Green Bay from 2006-2018 before joining Dallas from 2020-2024.

Many Steelers fans preferred a younger offensive or defensive mind. It’s confusing why the Steelers didn’t wait to interview Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula or pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase after the NFC Championship Game.

The Steelers got their guy, and it’s none other than the guy who grew up down the road in Greenfield staying home.

I absolutely stand by Tomlin having to be let go. But I had no idea that this franchise was so damn clueless. Shula was right there. Other young coaches that have proved themselves ready right there and they hire Mike McCarthy…. #Steelers

Scratch that, I’m seeing no positive things about picking Mike McCarthy from anyone #Steelers

I can’t sleep. I know when I wake up it will set in again that McCarthy is our HC. #Steelers#NFL

Usually I try and give the benefit of the doubt to the storied franchise that has an entire staff team to help make decisions.

The Packers and Cowboys offense both improved in EPA/play the year after McCarthy left. This might be the worst move they’ve ever made.#Steelers

One thing to keep in mind on the hiring of McCarthy. There was no rush to do it. However, doing it now does help with having more options to find the right assistant coaches and that was a major failure under Tomlin. #Steelers#SteelersNation

The last time I woke up feeling this down about the #Steelers was the day after they lost the Super Bowl to Mike McCarthy. #HereWeGo

Unfortunately, Mike McCarthy might not get the welcome he’s hoping for — and it’s no fault of his own.

Steelers fans wanted a younger coach. Someone to lead this team for decades.

Fair or not, that’s the reality he’s walking into.#NFL#Steelerspic.twitter.com/50IJwuWEWr

The #Steelers will never win another championship as long as ARII is in charge. That much is clear

#Steelers. Is McCarthy the sexy hire? No. He's the necessary hire for where the team is as a core roster and he's different enough. If Sean Peyton can do it, I believe Mccarthy can too. He's O has always graded well, just needs a defense. We have that. Give it a chance.

I’ve settled down. Time to give this man a chance. #Steelers#McCarthy#Howard#HereWeGo@steelerspic.twitter.com/ixD0QHIS65
