Steelers Star Named Surprise Trade Candidate
One year after making headlines by acquiring star wide receiver DK Metcalf in a blockbuster deal, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now being mentioned in an unexpected trade suggestion involving the very player they paid to lead their receiving corps.
Last offseason, Pittsburgh sent shockwaves across the NFL when it traded for Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and quickly signed him to a four-year, $132 million contract extension. The move signaled the organization’s commitment to adding an elite, physical playmaker to its offense and reshaping the team’s passing attack.
However, one analyst believes the Steelers could consider reversing course.
In a recent piece for Bleacher Report, writer Brad Gagnon listed Metcalf as the No. 2 player on his list of “surprise 2026 NFL offseason trade candidates.”
“Metcalf fell short of dominating in 2025, with just 59 catches (his lowest total since he was a rookie) and six touchdowns,” Gagnon writes. “Statistically, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he peaked in 2020 and 2021, when he scored 22 times (he’s found the end zone just 25 times in the four seasons since). Plus, Aaron Rodgers’ future is again up in the air and the Steelers could be in reset mode in search of a new quarterback for their new head coach, anyway.”
Despite the speculation, the logic behind a potential deal appears questionable at best. The Steelers currently have just three wide receivers under contract, making the position one of the team’s most pressing needs. Alongside Metcalf are Roman Wilson, who struggled to carve out a consistent role last season, and Ben Skowronek, who has primarily contributed on special teams.
Moving Metcalf would therefore create a massive void in the offense and force Pittsburgh to rebuild its entire receiver room. The team would likely need to add multiple pass catchers through both the draft and free agency, potentially bringing in four or more players just to stabilize the position group.
Still, in the NFL, few scenarios can be completely ruled out.
If the Steelers were to explore a trade involving Metcalf, two factors could play a role: the significant financial commitment tied to his contract and lingering concerns stemming from his suspension last season following an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan.
Even so, unless Pittsburgh were to receive an overwhelming return package, dealing one of the league’s premier physical receivers just a year after acquiring him would be a stunning decision.
For now, the idea remains speculation — but it highlights how unpredictable the NFL offseason can be.
