Stock Up, Stock Down: Bears-packers Review
It’s getting tough to get a read on the Chicago Bears. They’ve been feast or famine through five games.
Scoring 59 points, then three. Then 27, 23 and crashing back to seven points.
The defense allowed 37, nine, seven, 12 and 31 points.
Of course, it’s hard to find consistency with your backup quarterback(s).
Ideally, once Caleb Williams returns the volatility on the offensive side will level out.
The defensive side, however, might continue to be tough to watch the rest of the year.
Let’s get into this week’s list.
Stock up
Austin Booker, DE – Booker notched another two sacks on Sunday, three TFLs and two QB hits. He’s emerging as the No. 2 pass-rushing threat, something many have been hopeful of since he was drafted.
Zavion Thomas, WR – Thomas finally popped off this week. He took a jet sweep for 11 yards, had another catch for 11 yards and finally hit a kick return for 61 yards. He averaged 32 yards per return. Hopefully, he can keep building on his snaps.
Devin Bush, LB – Bush led the team in tackles and made a couple of the (very few) good plays for the defense, including two TFLs. Bush did get burned by Christian Watson on the latter’s first score. But it looked like he was expecting help over the top from Xavier Woods. Obviously if a linebacker, even one as fast as Bush, is expected to keep up with Watson, it’s just not going to happen.
Stock down
Tyson Bagent, QB – Bagent is a great story. Making the NFL alone as a D-II undrafted quarterback is a miracle itself. He’s earned every opportunity he’s gotten and he’s put in the work. Unfortunately, this is a results-based business and the results aren’t good. Bagent can be a decent backup in the league, but he’s not a starter.
Roschon Johnson, RB –The promise that was brought up again and again when Roschon was drafted never materialized. Last season there were a lot of questions about why he was unable to earn a role in Ben Johnson’s offense. We’ve all seen the reasons, now. Five carries, six yards.
Jaylon Johnson, CB – Johnson looks washed. I hate to say it, because it wasn’t long ago that he was a dynamic player and a huge part of the defense. Unfortunately, his injury looks like it’s robbed him of his speed. The Packers were deliberately targeting him every time they could and it worked seemingly every time.
Honorable mention:Ben Johnson, coach – Johnson was outmatched Sunday. He stuck with Bagent when it clearly wasn’t working and his playcalls didn’t seem to have any easy answers for Bagent.
Who is up and down in your world this week?
