Texans Front Office Face A Must-win Game Against The Chargers
The Houston Texans face the only winless team in the NFL this Sunday when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams had bigger plans that to waste away at the bottom of the AFC leaderboard
The Chargers season is toast. The Texans still have a glimmer of hope purely based on their history of digging themselves out of holes in the past. Plus, the AFC South is as winnable a division as there is this season.
The Texans lost their last three games by a combined 12 points. The Chargers have only scored above 20 points once this season, including scores of six, nine, and 14 twice.
For Houston, a win not only rights the ship and re-opens the opportunity to make a last-ditch effort to save the season, but its a mandatory performance for this coaching staff and front office. For all intents and purposes, a loss to the 0-7 LA Chargers will end the Nick Caserio era.
A 2-6 record with no early second round pick and a long list of undeveloped day two picks will be too much for this ownership group to look past. Houston has mortgaged their future without any near-term payout. They are $33.8M in the hole next year… before they even extend C.J. Stroud. Plus, they stand to lose Davis Mills, Tank Dell, Tommy Togiai, and Trent Brown. Houston is over-leveraged and is crashing like the ‘08 market.
One person not in the spotlight is Frank Edgerly the Senior Director of Football Research and Game Management. He’s been with the team since 2023 and is a disciple of Caserio stemming back from their time in New England. The Texans defensive scheme was observed, analyzed, and addressed by the entire league this offseason. His role in not addressing these issues by self-scouting has been apparent. Not to mention the game management issues late into the fourth quarter where the team has been our maneuvered time and time again.
The Chargers woes have stemmed from their horrific offensive line, inability to run the ball, and QB Justin Herbert’s regression. He’s thrown five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. When the Texans faced him in the 2024 AFC Wild Card Round, he had thrown just three interceptions all season. He’s been sacked 23 times on pace to pass his career high last year of 54. Houston desperately needs to add to both his interception and sack totals to win this do or die game against the Chargers.
On defense, the Chargers have struggled to generate pass rush all season. DEs Tuli Tuipulotu and Khalil Mack lead the team with three sacks each. Like Houston, they lack an inside pass rusher who can disrupt the pocket. Thats ideal for Houston, whose achilles heel has been conceding pressure on the inside. With a good pocket, C.J. Stroud should be able to find his top targets on offense.
Houston’s hot seat will remain hot even if Houston wins against the Chargers. They face next the Deshaun Watson-led Cleveland Browns, who are the darling of the 2026 season with a 5-3 record. Deshaun Watson’s trade, orchestrated by Nick Caserio in just his third month as General Manager. That trade netted Houston three first round picks, two fourth round pick, and a third.
As it turns out, the compensation on the blockbuster trade has changed: Browns now are giving up six draft picks for Deshaun Watson; also instead of giving up a 2024 5th-round pick, it’s now a 2024 6th-round pick, per today’s wire. pic.twitter.com/Y98WFPmYeE

Without the overwhelming draft capital he was able to use to maneuver throughout drafts, he has struggled to make sound decisions early in the draft. He’s reached on players to fill needs, creating further issues at critical positions such as offensive line and defensive tackle. The 2025 and 2026 draft classes have been rife with under-performing draft picks at high value selections. Caserio will be directly graded against the outcome of both this Chargers game Sunday and the upcoming matchup against Cleveland.
Both games are on the road.
All that being said, if Houston can turn it around these next two weeks, things do look up for them. They play the actively taking Colts, a Lamar Jackson-less Ravens team, a winnable game against the Steelers, and a tossup against the Commanders. If Houston exits this six-game stretch at 7-6, they will be squarely in the hunt for another wild card spot in a crowded AFC. 5-1 is mandatory for Houston. Otherwise they need to close up shop on this season and multiple members of the front office.
