Texans Place Rookie Dt Kayden Mcdonald On Ir

On the eve of their regular season debut, the Houston Texans have announced another significant injury. Rookie DT Kayden McDonald is apparently suffering from an ankle injury and will begin the regular season on injured reserve. Battle Red Blog’s Nickschwager noted McDonald’s appearance on the injury report yesterday, but a placement on IR is a new and rather sudden development.

McDonald will now be inactive for the first four games of the 2026 regular season: vs. Buffalo Bills, vs. Cincinnati Bengals, @ Indianapolis Colts, and vs. Dallas Cowboys. He will be eligible to return for Houston’s match against the Tennessee Titans on October 11th. In the meantime, the Texans are signing DT Jaden Crumedy from the Green Bay Packers practice squad.

Houston Chronicle reporter Jonathan M. Alexanderstated following the announcement, “McDonald suffered the injury in practice Wednesday, a league source said. He did not practice Thursday or Friday and wore a protective boot over his foot in the locker room”

Kayden McDonald, despite being a rookie second-round pick, was fixing to have a significant impact on Houston’s dominant defensive line. He earned first team All-American honors while starting for Ohio State in 2025, and quickly ascended draft boards after establishing himself as one of the best run-stoppers in the 2026 NFL Draft. He had a lot of fans here at Battle Red Blog, and I even got the chance to ask him a question representing the Blog at the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh:

He finished his final collegiate season with 65(!) tackles, a preposterous stat for a beefy interior lineman, and his pass-rush seemed to be improving down the stretch. Fortunately for the Texans, they still have depth in the interior defensive line, with starting DTs Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai still expected to absorb the majority of snaps. But, McDonald was brought in with the express purpose of being a run-stuffer who would contribute on early downs, something that could have pushed this defense to even greater heights. And, don’t look now, but there are currently four Texans defensive linemen on IR: McDonald, DE Dylan Horton, DE Solomon Byrd, and DE Ali Gaye. Fortunately, none of these players are starters, but depth at a pretty important spot on this year’s Texans team is now significantly thinner, especially during a fairly grizzly opening slate of games. We already know the Cowboys and Bills have great offenses, but the Bengals and Colts could both find themselves near to the top of the league in offensive production by year’s end, too. 

Regardless, this Texans defense is one of the few groups in the league that can push through this wave of injuries relatively unscathed. Togiai, Mario Edwards Jr. and free-agent addition DT Logan Hall will have bigger roles this Sunday trying to contain defending NFL rushing leader RB James Cook, who ran for 116 yards and a touchdown at a piercing 6.8 Y/A against our mighty Texans defense in Week 12 last year. They’re hands will be very, very full this coming Sunday, but if there was a team able to take this blow and keep charging forward, it’s this Texans team!
