The Celtics Have Signed Another Young, Intriguing Player

The Celtics have reportedly signed former Sacramento Kings lottery pick Devin Carter to a training camp contract, per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. Carter, who was drafted 13th overall in 2024, will be one of four players on Exhibit-10 deals to compete for a two-way contract this fall.

Last season, in his sophomore campaign, Carter averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes across 38 games. Though he had several big-time performances in the Spring, he’s been a below-average shooter in the NBA; he shot 41.4% from the field and 26.3% from three. But, Carter has been able to put pressure on the rim, and is a strong perimeter defender.

In college, Carter played for the University of South Carolina (2021-2022) and Providence (2022-2024). In his senior season, he was named the Big East Player of the Year after averaging 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.

But, after a lackluster second year in Sacramento, Carter was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a salary dump and later waived. Now, he’ll join one of the most illustrious franchises in sports.

Devin Carter could turn a training camp deal into a real opportunity

While there’s no guarantee that Carter will secure the Celtics’ third remaining two-way contract, there is precedent for this kind of situation being fruitful in Boston.

Last year, Ron Harper Jr. arrived in Boston on a training camp deal as one of several players duking it out for a two-way deal. Harper Jr. ultimately beat out Jalen Bridges, Kendall Brown, and Wendell Moore for the spot, and went on to have such a good season in the G League that he was ultimately signed to a standard roster spot. Now, Harper Jr. is on a 4-year, $13.7 million contract.

The Celtics have yet to officially announce the Devin Carter signing, but training camp formally opens up on Monday, September 28th.
