As this season continues to spiral, the effects are currently being felt. All of the losing has cost the Indianapolis Colts two of their franchise pillars. More could fall soon. The losing is taking its toll on fans and players alike. Sometimes there is a silver lining, though. The good thing is that it’s true in this case. The bad thing is that silver lining belongs to the New York Jets.

Two first-round picks were surrendered for Sauce Gardner. Two. The first one was felt as the Colts dropped from Super Bowl contention and into the middle of the draft. That is pain most can live with. It’s this year’s lingering pain that has carried over and is making this dreadful season that much worse to watch. Instead of the Colts anticipating a potential top-ten pick in the first round of the draft, the Jets are sitting pretty at fourth overall.

You can’t have a rainbow without the rain, and sometimes there is a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. That isn’t the case for the Colts this year. Normally, pain is rewarded with a great opportunity to start fresh, gather new cornerstones to build your franchise out of the ashes. Yes, the Colts, with whatever horrific record they finish, will still have good positioning in subsequent rounds, but that lack of a first-round selection could haunt them.

Let’s not even talk about the return. As good as Gardner can be, he has missed way too much time in his short stint with the Colts to be deemed worthy of the trade. Oh, and what did the Colts throw in at the end? Adonai Mitchell. He seems to be having a bit of a resurgence after getting into Shane Steichen’s doghouse and being a throw away piece. Seeing any success he has is also a tough watch.

These are the stings that can stick with a franchise for a long time. If it all holds, not having the fourth overall pick is going to make some people sick. It has already cost some their jobs. That will only compound the issue. If the Jets select a Hall of Fame player with that selection, look out. This is the state of the Colts, and the Jets will be laughing all the way to the bank
