Tony Dungy Out At Nbc After 17 Years On Sunday's Nfl Pregame Show

NBC is making changes ahead of the 2026 NFL season. Former Indianapolis Colts head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dungy announced Thursday that his time on the network’s “Football Night in America” has come to an end.

Dungy, 70, spent the previous 17 seasons as a mainstay on the program, which airs ahead of “Sunday Night Football.”

The move isn’t a major surprise, as The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand mentioned in February the possibility of the network moving on without Dungy.

While no other changes were announced yet, NBC could take a different track with the program moving forward. Marchand mentioned in February that the network could slim down the cast with the goal of taking the show on the road along with “Sunday Night Football.”

Dungy originally joined NBC back in 2009, shortly after he retired from coaching. Dungy and former New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison — who Dungy praised as “a tremendous friend” during his post Thursday — started at the network at the same time.

Prior to that, Dungy spent 13 seasons as an NFL head coach. He started his head-coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led the team to a 54-42 record over six seasons. He made the playoffs in four of those seasons, but went just 2-4 in those appearances.

Following his firing in 2001, Dungy quickly latched on with the Colts, where he coached for seven seasons. He made the playoffs every single year in Indianapolis, leading the Colts to a Super Bowl win over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.

Dungy experienced a few moments of controversy while working with NBC, though they never impacted his employment. In 2014, he found himself in hot water after saying drafting openly gay NFL player Michael Sam would be a distraction in the locker room. In 2023, he faced criticism after sharing a debunked story about a school putting litter boxes in a classroom. Dungy later issued two apologies for that post.
