Tony Romo Placed On Leave By Cbs Following Arrest On Suspicion Of Owi

Tony Romo has been placed on leave by CBS Sports "until further notice" following his July 23 arrest in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.

J.J. Watt will replace Romo during the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback's absence and work alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Romo, 46, was stopped by Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office deputies going southbound on I-43 and "performed poorly on SFSTs (standard field sobriety tests)," according to an arrest report.

He has a court date set for Sept. 21.

Romo has been CBS Sports' lead NFL analyst since 2017 following his retirement from the league. He spent his entire 13-year playing career with the Dallas Cowboys, rising from an undrafted free agent to a four-time Pro Bowl selection and the franchise's all-time leader in touchdown passes.

In body camera footage, Romo told deputies that he was en route "to visit grandma and grandpa."

The former quarterback, who went to high school in nearby Burlington, Wisconsin, had been playing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship and said he was coming from the golf course.

A deputy told Romo he was pulled over for "unsafe passing," "lane deviation" and "cutting across the gore."

Watt, 37, also joined CBS Sports upon the completion of his decorated playing, which ended in 2022.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year began his broadcasting career in 2023 as a studio analyst on "The NFL Today," a long-running pre-game show.

In 2025, he was paired with Ian Eagle to form the network's No. 2 NFL broadcasting team behind Romo and Nantz.

"There is nothing better than the energy and excitement of being in the stadium on game day in the NFL," Watt said in a statement in 2025 after taking on the in-game analyst role. "I couldn't pass up the opportunity to return to that atmosphere each week, working with one of the best in Ian."
