The Utah Jazz announced today that they have waived Blake Hinson and signed Kobe Bufkin to a two-way contract. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as Hinson really showed flashes of scoring ability towards the end of last season, shooting a blistering 46.8% from beyond the arc. It’s also very disappointing after Hinson’s endearing postgame interview after a preseason win over the Denver Nuggets.

Kobe Bufkin was the 15th overall pick in 2023. He hasn’t played much in the NBA, only getting playing time in 43 games over 3 seasons. His career averages are: 4.2 points per game to go along with 1.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. I can’t say I understand the logic of this move by the front office as he is a worse shooter, and is shorter than Hinson. Also worth pointing out that they could have waived any other player who was on a two-way contract to make room for Bufkin. I really don’t think that the front office views Harrison Ingram or Tre Alexander as a greater talent than Hinson. Maybe the hamstring strain that Hinson was listed with on the injury report was more severe than previously thought? Or maybe the front office just values ball handling more than shooting for the two-way players. Whatever the reason for Hinson being waved it is a massive disappointment as most Jazz fans (myself very much included) believed that he could provide great depth, and legit NBA shooting to the team.
