Washington Commanders Free Agency: Veteran Offensive Lineman Reportedly Signed

Training camp rolls on and the Washington Commanders continue to tweak their roster for competition, and also to deal with injuries and retirements. Washington released OL Tyler Cooper yesterday to open a roster spot for WR Stefon Diggs, and they have now reportedly added another veteran offensive lineman to the roster.

Max Scharping was a second-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2019. He started 33 regular season and two playoff games in Houston before getting released during the final roster cutdowns in his fourth season. Scharping was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals, but only played 43 snaps on offense for them over two seasons. He did start three games in the playoffs in his first year with the Bengals. Scharping then took a mini-tour of the NFC East with brief stints in Philadelphia and Washington in 2024. He ended up going back to the AFC North, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he only appeared in two games over two seasons.

The Commanders offensive line has been dealing with a calf injury to projected starting center Nick Allegretti that has forced them to work other players at the position and sign another player to allow camp reps to continue on schedule. The right guard position is locked down by Sam Cosmi, while left guard is a repeat of last year’s battle between Brandon Coleman and Chris Paul. The interior depth can always be improved, but Scharping looks like a camp body, with a possibility to make the practice squad eventually. Teams always need OL depth especially during a hot Virginia training camp that will players getting dinged up.
