Which 49ers Star Has Most At Stake In 2026 Nfl Season, Per League Insider
Which 49ers star has most at stake in 2026 NFL season, per league insider originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Nick Bosa has been the 49ers’ best pass rusher for the better part of a decade. This season, he might also be the player carrying the most pressure of anyone on the roster.
The Athletic’s Vic Tafur named Bosa the 49ers player with the most at stake heading into 2026, and the case is not hard to make. Bosa is working back from the second ACL tear of his career — his third knee surgery overall — while being asked to anchor a pass rush that finished among the league’s worst in both pressures and sacks a season ago. He also is expected to mentor a young defensive line that includes second-year pro Mykel Williams and fellow edge, rookie Romello Height, even as he tries to return to the level that once earned him Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The financial stakes are just as real. San Francisco restructured Bosa’s contract in March, converting a significant portion of his salary into a signing bonus to free up $17.172 million in 2026 cap space. The move lowered his 2026 number to $23.18 million — but pushed his 2027 cap hit to a staggering $54.9 million, on the back end of the five-year, $170 million extension he signed in 2023. That kind of maneuver buys short-term flexibility, but it also all but guarantees Bosa and the 49ers will need to revisit his contract again next offseason.
The timing of the restructure was no accident. It came directly after edge rusher Bryce Huff’s surprise retirement at just 27 years old, ending a six-year career after only one season with the 49ers. Huff’s departure left San Francisco thin at a position already relying heavily on Bosa’s health, and the front office has since been connected to speculation about pursuing additional pass-rushing help before the season begins.
Whatever happens on the field, Bosa’s presence alone tends to draw extra attention from opposing offenses — attention that could open real opportunities for Williams, Height and the rest of San Francisco’s young defensive front to make their own mark.

There is a broader argument that nearly every player on this roster carries some version of this same pressure, with the 49ers’ championship window widely viewed as narrowing. But this franchise has a habit of proving that narrative wrong.
Whether Bosa can stay healthy and dominant one more time will go a long way toward determining if 2026 becomes another chapter in that pattern.
