Why This Free Agent Linebacker Would Be A Good Signing For The Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys have been uncharacteristically busy this offseason, snatching up talent to reshape the roster and keeping fans glued to the free agent tracker as it continues to change frequently. From defensive back reinforcements to help in the trenches, the front office has checked many boxes on the spring to-do list to help strengthen the defense. However, there is a glaring hole in the middle of the defense that remains unplugged, as the team has yet to add a linebacker.
Last season, the linebacker corps struggled repeatedly. When the unit was not getting washed out in the run game, they were missing tackles at an alarming rate. They were little to no help in coverage, and anyone they tried to deploy wasn’t much better than the last. It wasn’t pretty.
That’s why adding a linebacker in free agency feels very important, and one guy who could help the team is Germaine Pratt. A seasoned veteran, Pratt has been putting up impressive numbers while flying under the national radar. Over the last two seasons, he has evolved into a tackling machine, surpassing 100 tackles in each of the last four seasons. He played a pivotal role in keeping his previous teams competitive, showing a knack for being in the right place at the right time during high-stakes moments. His recent stretch of play suggests he is not just a placeholder but a legitimate contributor for a defense in need of a pulse.
Pratt’s greatest strengths lie in his diagnostic speed. His background as a former safety gives him a natural feel for passing lanes. He possesses the size to take on climbing guards and the length to disrupt throwing windows, making him a versatile chess piece. His ability to punch the ball loose and track down ball carriers from sideline to sideline is exactly what the Cowboys need.
Of course, no player is without flaws, and Pratt does occasionally struggle with lateral agility when matched up against the league’s shiftier receivers. While he is a downhill hammer, his over-aggressive nature can sometimes lead to him over-pursuing and losing his gap integrity. He has also dealt with bouts of tackling inconsistency, where he prefers the big hit over the fundamental wrap-up.
When it comes to Christian Parker’s defensive scheme, Pratt is a strong fit who checks the most important boxes for the team’s new defensive leader. His intelligence allows him to handle the complex pre-snap checks and brainwork that Parker demands from his interior players. His experience in light boxes means he is comfortable playing with less help in front of him, using his frame to shed blocks effectively. Finally, his ability to drop into zone shells aligns with the multiple coverage looks that define the Parker system.
The Cowboys have a lot of work to do to fix one of their biggest weakness on defense. Bringing a veteran like Pratt into the fold offers the leadership, production, and schematic versatility that this young defense desperately needs to take a step forward. Signing him would provide some added stability to this unit. Ultimately, the real answer may likely be found in the upcoming draft, but filling one of their holes with a solid veteran presence would be a nice precursor.
Germaine Pratt would be a very good Stack Linebacker for Leonhard's scheme..
