Question Of The Day: Does Ford (finally) Need A Car?

Ford is making noise about “expanding” its Mustang portfolio “again.” Quotation marks are used because no one feels that the Mach-E is actually a Mustang. That said, it’s got the badge and most of us are done arguing about it. 

The next iteration rumored to be coming to a production line near southeastern Michigan is a Mustang Raptor. Borrowing a page from Porsche’s (and a few others) playbook, the off-road Mustang is said to be coming in a couple of years. And while it would be easy to ask, if that’s a good idea, the real question the company needs to be asking is: Is it time to start producing sedans again?

The car — actual car, not crossover, SUV, or pickup — has been absent from Ford’s line up since 2020 when the last Fusion, which was a fine automobile, made its last appearance. Ford CEO Jim Farley told me in January that a car isn’t out of the question. In an era when affordability is a pressing concern, a car is a good way to meet the needs of the fiscally limited. So … is it time for Ford to make cars again? Let us know.
