American’s Email: “see What’s Coming For Aadvantage® Members” (downgrades Of Course!)
American Airlines sent out an email earlier today about what is coming for AAdvantage members, without mentioning that they are starting to limit complimentary upgrades.
You had to click the link in the email to find out that AAdvantage members’ complimentary upgrades on domestic routes will be from economy to premium economy, rather than to business, on aircraft with a premium economy cabin.
You can access AA’s page for the program change here.
The change currently affects the following routes:
New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX)
New York (JFK) to San Francisco (SFO)
Boston (BOS) to Los Angeles (LAX)
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Honolulu (HNL)
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Kona (KOA)
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Maui (OGG)
Phoenix (PHX) to Honolulu (HNL)
Chicago (ORD) to Honolulu (HNL)
Chicago (ORD) to Maui (OGG)
AA’s Update:
Complimentary upgrades to Premium Economy
Select flights to / from Hawaii and coast to coast
Starting Aug. 25, 2026, status members in the Main Cabin will upgrade to Premium Economy on select flights to / from Hawaii and select transcontinental routes, when eligible seats are available. You’ll still be eligible for an upgrade to Business if:
- You bought a Premium Economy ticket
- Premium Economy isn’t offered on your flight
- You bought an Instant Upgrade to Premium Economy
This update only applies to complimentary upgrades. Systemwide upgrades can still be used to move up from Business to First, or from Main Cabin or Premium Economy to the next class (Business or domestic First).
Upgrade process
For any complimentary upgrade to Premium Economy or Business, we’ll automatically make the request after your flight is ticketed. The rest of the upgrade process remains the same — you’ll continue to be confirmed before departure, based on status.Set featured image
We’ll do our best to accommodate your seating preferences, though options may vary depending on aircraft type and availability. In Premium Economy, some aircraft types include middle seats, so you may be assigned one if other seating options aren’t available.
What happens to my upgrade on an upcoming trip? This content can be expanded
On Aug. 25, 2026, we’ll begin updating existing upgrade requests from Main Cabin to reflect Premium Economy on eligible flights. It will take a few days for this update to be completed. You can check your trip for any updates in the American app or on aa.com.
Any already confirmed upgrades to Business will be honored as long as there are no changes to your trip.

Conclusion
This doesn’t affect the use of systemwide upgrades that will clear from economy to business on these routes. But don’t you think this will eventually be introduced on all AA routes with a premium economy cabin?
I really don’t like it when businesses try to hide negative information when announcing something.
