Gavin Gallaher’s Unc Return Gives Diamond Heels Crucial Infield Continuity
Gavin Gallaher entered the 2026 MLB Draft as one of North Carolina’s most intriguing professional prospects. When his name was not called during the draft’s 20 rounds, however, the disappointing individual result quickly created some very encouraging news for the Diamond Heels.
Gallaher is now positioned to return to Chapel Hill for his senior season, providing head coach Scott Forbes with another proven veteran as North Carolina attempts to make another run at the program’s elusive first national championship.

More importantly, Gallaher’s return means the Diamond Heels should bring back three of their four starting infielders from the team that advanced to the 2026 College World Series Championship Series.
Shortstop and leadoff hitter Jake Schaffner will be the lone departure from that group after the Boston Red Sox selected him with the 20th overall pick. Gallaher, Erik Paulsen (1B) and Cooper Nicholson (3B), meanwhile, can give Carolina continuity around the rest of the diamond.
That stability should be extremely valuable for a program replacing several important contributors throughout its lineup. Schaffner and center fielder Owen Hull were two of the team’s most productive offensive players, while catcher Macon Winslow was also selected in the draft. Rather than rebuilding the entire middle of the batting order and defensive alignment, Forbes can construct the 2027 team around several players who already understand North Carolina’s expectations and have performed on college baseball’s biggest stage.
Seismic news for the @DiamondHeels as all 20 rounds of the draft are complete and Gavin Gallaher will be a Tar Heel in 2027. With Erik Paulsen and Cooper Nicholson also returning and Caden Glauber and Jackson Rose already in the fold, Heels will be contenders again next year.…

Gallaher, a captain on the 2026 squad, is the centerpiece of that returning group.
The veteran infielder started all 69 games for the Diamond Heels in 2026, batting .291 with an .865 OPS. He collected 84 hits, including 14 doubles, three triples and 12 home runs, while driving in 64 runs and scoring 79 times. Gallaher also stole eight bases in nine attempts. He finished second on the team in RBIs and third in hits, home runs and total bases.
His production came after an outstanding sophomore campaign in which he hit .325 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs while starting every game at third base. Gallaher moved primarily to second base in 2026 and handled the transition well enough to not only strengthen his profile as a versatile infielder, but also win a Gold Glove.
The draft outcome was certainly unexpected. Gallaher was ranked among the top draft-eligible prospects and seemed likely to hear his name called at some point. Instead, all 20 rounds passed without a team selecting him, opening the door for one more season in Carolina blue (or maybe even two in the new 5-in-5 model). One wonders if teams knew that after a certain point in the draft, Gallaher would opt to return to Chapel Hill rather sign his professional contract.
Gallaher will now have an opportunity to improve his professional stock while pursuing unfinished business with the Diamond Heels. He can enter next season as one of the roster’s most experienced players, a potential middle-of-the-order anchor and a natural leader for a team that will incorporate transfers and younger contributors.
North Carolina cannot simply replace everything it lost from its national runner-up roster. Bringing back three-fourths of the starting infield, though, provides an excellent foundation.
Gallaher’s return is about much more than one player unexpectedly going undrafted. It gives the Diamond Heels proven production, defensive familiarity and veteran leadership in one of the most important areas of the field—and significantly strengthens their chances of returning to Omaha in 2027.
