Mcconnell’s Team Offers Another Cryptic Update As Health Questions Mount
Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health situation is becoming increasingly difficult to understand, largely because his team continues to provide very little information about the 84-year-old senator’s condition.
It has now been roughly two and a half months since emergency responders were called to McConnell’s Washington home and he was taken to the hospital. His staff has maintained that he suffered a fall and subsequently developed pneumonia, while insisting that he did not have a heart attack or stroke.
That explanation has raised questions because audio from the emergency response reportedly indicated that first responders were dispatched for a patient in cardiac arrest.
McConnell has remained almost entirely out of public view since then. His office's most recent substantive update came Aug. 6, when he said he had been released from a rehabilitation facility and would continue an intensive physical-therapy program at home while staying involved with Senate business.
Three weeks later, however, his communications director, Stephanie Penn, reportedly declined to supply any further information about his condition or his plans for returning to the Senate. Her response was essentially that there was nothing to add to the previous statement.
