Openai's Shared Usage Limits Could Cost Them Something More Valuable Than Subscribers: The Users Who Help Improve Their Models
I think OpenAI might be overlooking something important with the upcoming shared usage limits.
It's not just about losing paying subscribers. It's about potentially losing some of the most valuable users for improving the models themselves.
I've been using ChatGPT extensively for almost a year and a half. Not just to ask questions or generate content, but as a reasoning partner for technical problems, business decisions, complex projects, and discussions like this one.
And I don't want ChatGPT to agree with me. Quite the opposite.
I challenge its answers, point out mistakes, test assumptions, provide real-world results, and expect it to challenge my reasoning in return. Sometimes we spend hours working through a problem, correcting each other until we reach a verifiable conclusion.
Now think about the value of that kind of interaction.
You can train a model on millions of technical documents, books, websites, and synthetic examples. But those sources don't necessarily show how an experienced user approaches an unexpected real-world problem, identifies a mistake in the model's reasoning, tests a hypothesis, and provides feedback based on actual results.
That's a different kind of information.
And it's not just about the final answer. The entire process of reasoning, testing, correction, and verification can be valuable.
Of course, not every conversation is used for training, and user interactions aren't the only reason AI models improve. I'm not claiming otherwise.
But I have always explicitly allowed my conversations to be used for training. I consider it a fair exchange for the value I receive from a €23/month subscription.
Codex is a different matter for me. I use it for specific tasks, and if I need additional capacity, I'm perfectly happy to pay for more tokens. That's a measurable operating cost.
ChatGPT Chat is different.
It's where I think, explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and work through problems without constantly worrying about a usage counter.
If that experience becomes significantly more restrictive because Chat and Codex now compete for the same allowance, I'll have to consider more economical alternatives.
And I suspect I'm not alone.
Here's the potential problem for OpenAI: the users most affected by these restrictions may also be among those providing some of the richest feedback.
A casual user asking a few questions isn't necessarily contributing the same kind of information as an experienced user spending hours identifying errors, testing solutions, and correcting the model.
That doesn't mean casual users are unimportant. It means different kinds of interactions have different potential value.
If enough advanced users leave, OpenAI doesn't just lose subscription revenue. It could also lose valuable real-world feedback, evaluation signals, and insight into how its models perform under demanding conditions.
That creates the possibility of a negative feedback loop: restrictions drive away demanding users, fewer demanding users means fewer opportunities to discover and correct difficult problems, and the product potentially becomes less attractive to the very people who push it hardest.
I'm not saying this outcome is inevitable. We still don't know how generous the new allowances will actually be.
But I think it's a serious strategic risk.
A company focused exclusively on the immediate cost of serving its users might overlook the long-term value those users bring to improving its product.
The question OpenAI should be asking isn't simply:
"How much does this user cost us in compute?"
It should also be:
"How much would it cost us to obtain equally valuable feedback somewhere else?"
Because an advanced user isn't necessarily just a consumer of tokens.
They can also be part of what makes the next generation of models better.
And encouraging those users to start looking for alternatives seems like a rather questionable business strategy.
