Patrick Dumont Becomes Mavericks Controlling Owner After Buying Out Miriam Adelson
Sivan and Patrick Dumont have bought Miriam Adelson's shares of the Dallas Mavericks, giving the Dumont family a 69 percent controlling stake. The purchase was completed last month, Patrick Dumont told ESPN on Tuesday.
"It's really about long-term investment in the city of Dallas," said Dumont. "The Dumont family is really committed to building what we hope is the best arena in the NBA, a really significant investment in the city that will help create the new 40-year home for the Dallas Mavericks, a great experience for our fans and inspire our team to win championships. That's really what we're focused on. We had the opportunity, and we're really excited about it."
Adelson bought the majority stake from Mark Cuban in December 2023 alongside her daughter and son-in-law. Adelson had minimal involvement with the team, while Patrick Dumont has served as governor since the sale.
Cuban still holds 27 percent of the franchise. Under the 2023 sale terms, Dumont can purchase another 20 percent from Cuban at the original $3.5 billion valuation.
"Our plan is to look at that and to do that over time," said Dumont. "I just have to tell you: I love Mark. He's been a great family friend for a really long time. He's just a super passionate Mavs fan and he's frustrated. I respect it."
Cuban has expressed regret over the sale after being shut out of basketball and business operations.
Dumont faced heavy fan backlash for approving the trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025. Dumont fired general manager Nico Harrison last November and hired Masai Ujiri as team president in May.
"This is Masai Ujiri's team," said Dumont. "He's got a ring. He knows what he's doing."
Ujiri replaced coach Jason Kidd with Dusty May and hired Mike Schmitz as general manager.
The Mavericks are planning a new arena, scheduled to open in 2031. The team has an option to buy a 104-acre site at the former Valley View Mall in north Dallas, where rezoning is underway.
CEO Rick Welts will retire at the end of the year with team president Ethan Casson succeeding him.
