Toronto Pizzeria Pens Heartfelt Message As It Closes Permanently
A Toronto restaurant that serves up a rarely-seen style of pizza has closed its doors after over a decade in business.
Pizza joints are everywhere in this city — you don't have to be an expert on the subject to know that much. From old-school family joints to upscale restaurants and all the middle-of-the-road chains, you're never far away from your next slice.
When it comes to Armenian pizza, which is actually a flatbread dish topped with minced meat and vegetables called lahmajoun, options in the city have historically been more limited.
Luckily for fans of the dish, Scarborough's Mamajoun has readily supplied the stuff ever since 2014. Serving both traditional versions of lamajoun and more pizza-esque versions, on top of sandwiches, sides and baked goods, the restaurant is an undeniable neighbourhood staple.
Rather, Mamajoun was a neighbourhood staple, that is, until the restaurant took to its Instagram account on Jan. 31 to announce its abrupt closure after just over 11 years.
"After more than 11 incredible years in business, the time has come for us to say goodbye and begin a new chapter," the Instagram post, signed by owners Mihran, Natasha, Lizette and Gregory, reads.
"Since opening our doors on November 14, 2014, Mamajoun Pizzeria has been more than just a place to grab a slice — it's been a home away from home for us and, we hope, for many of you too."
The heartfelt message goes on to thank the restaurant's loyal customer base, the city's Armenian community, staff past and present, and the team's family and friends for making the pizzeria's lengthy 11-year run possible.
All isn't completely lost, though. The letter closes with the promise that "this is not goodbye — it's simply see you later." There's a new concept in a new location on the way for Mamajoun so, with any luck, that means more of the restaurant's lahmajoun will be available soon.
While the details of the new chapter in question are under wraps for now, the Mamajoun team says that they "can't wait to share what's next with you." If I may briefly speak for the people of Toronto, we can't wait, either.
Mamajoun was formerly located at 209 Ellesmere Rd.
