Toyota’s Ev Sales Skyrocket 127% While Overall Sales Fall

Toyota’s electric vehicle sales have more than doubled in 2026, even as the Japanese automaker continues to struggle with falling sales of gasoline and hybrid cars in China.

According to the company’s latest sales figures, Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus sold 309,766 fully electric vehicles worldwide during the first nine months of 2026.

This represents a 127.4% increase compared with the same period last year.

However, Toyota’s overall global sales continued to decline, mainly because of weaker demand in China, one of its largest markets.

Toyota’s Electric Vehicle Sales More Than Double

Toyota has recorded strong growth in electric vehicle sales throughout 2026.

Except for January, when sales increased 87.5%, the company’s monthly EV sales have more than doubled compared with the corresponding months in 2025.

The growth follows the introduction of updated electric models, including the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ.

Toyota has also expanded its electric vehicle lineup with models such as the C-HR+, bZ4X Touring, and Urban Cruiser.

Meanwhile, Lexus has introduced an electric version of the ES sedan.

The Toyota bZ4X has also become one of the world’s more popular electric vehicles, selling nearly 100,000 units during the first eight months of 2026.

According to EV sales data, it ranked among the world’s 20 best-selling electric models during that period.

Despite this rapid growth, fully electric vehicles still account for a relatively small portion of Toyota’s total sales.

Toyota’s Overall Global Sales Continue to Fall

While electric vehicle sales increased sharply, Toyota’s total vehicle sales declined for the third consecutive month in September.

The automaker sold 860,107 vehicles worldwide during the month, a 2.2% decrease compared with September 2025.

For the first nine months of 2026, Toyota sold approximately 7.51 million vehicles globally, down 3.4% from the previous year.

The decline was largely driven by weaker demand in China, where sales of gasoline-powered and hybrid vehicles have been particularly affected.

Toyota said rising gasoline prices and difficult market conditions contributed to lower demand.

Toyota Sales Drop Nearly 20% in China

China remains one of Toyota’s most important markets, second only to the United States.

However, the company has been facing declining sales there for several months.

Toyota’s sales in China fell 19.7% in September, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline.

During the first nine months of 2026, the company sold approximately 1.05 million vehicles in China, a decrease of 18.9% compared with the same period last year.

For comparison, Toyota sold approximately 1.19 million vehicles in Japan during the same period, putting its home market ahead of China in sales volume.

The Japanese automaker faces growing competition from Chinese manufacturers, particularly companies such as BYD, which have expanded their electric vehicle offerings.

Toyota currently sells several electric models in China through its joint ventures with GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota, including the bZ3, bZ3X, bZ5, and bZ7.

Toyota Plans More Electric Cars to Compete in China

Toyota is working to strengthen its position in China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.

The company is expanding its electric vehicle lineup and adopting more local manufacturing methods to reduce costs.

According to earlier reports, Toyota plans to manufacture a new Lexus electric SUV at its upcoming facility in Shanghai.

Production is expected to begin in 2027.

The company is also exploring advanced manufacturing techniques that could reduce production costs and improve efficiency.

Toyota’s latest sales figures show that demand for its electric vehicles is growing rapidly.

However, the company still faces the challenge of maintaining its much larger gasoline and hybrid vehicle business, particularly in China, where competition and changing customer demand continue to affect sales.
