Liberty Home Care & Hospice Strikes Deal For Ecu Health’s Home Health Division

Liberty Home Care and Hospice has announced plans to acquire ECU Health’s home health and hospice division.

ECU, a North Carolina-based health system, is selling four home health offices, three hospice locations and a hospice house. Financial terms of the transaction are undisclosed. The deal is pending approval from the North Carolina Attorney General’s office.

“As the rural health landscape continues to experience complex challenges and pressures, including shrinking reimbursement, it is essential we explore every opportunity to ensure high-quality services remain accessible to the people of eastern North Carolina,” Brian Floyd, chief operating officer, ECU Health, said in a statement. “This decision was made with sustainability and continuation of services at the forefront. Liberty Home Care and Hospice brings the scale, expertise and mission-driven focus needed to help ensure uninterrupted high-quality home health and hospice care for patients and families who depend on these services.”

The decision to sell was guided by a commitment to ensuring long-term sustainability and access to home-based and end-of-life care, according to ECU Health.

Liberty currently operates across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The proportion of North Carolina’s population that is 65 or older grew to 17% in 2021 from 13.2% in 2011, according to the state’s Office of State Budget and Management. The senior population is expected to double by 2040, to about 2.7 million people.
