Jason Reynolds Announces Father, Father, His First Adult Novel

Card image cap

Jason Reynolds is moving into adult fiction with Father, Father, a novel about two estranged brothers traveling together after their father’s death. Scribner announced the book on October 28, and the publisher lists a U.S. release date of June 1, 2027.

For readers who know Reynolds through his writing for young people, the announcement offers a new reason to follow his work: a family story that places adult relationships at its center.

What Is Father, Father About?

The novel follows brothers Jesus and Second on a drive from Maryland to Iowa. They are separated in age by decades and carry very different memories of their late father, Danger.

Second remembers a man he admired. Jesus has a more troubled relationship with that same history. Their shared journey brings those differences into the car with them.

That premise raises an interesting question: what happens when siblings grieve the same parent but struggle to recognize each other’s version of him?

Why the Announcement Matters

Reynolds explained in a statement reported by the Associated Press that flawed adults have appeared throughout his earlier writing. This time, he said, “the adults are front and center.”

The distinction makes this announcement more interesting than a simple change of audience. An adult novel gives those parents and siblings room to become the principal subjects of the story, with their own conflicting needs and explanations.

From an editorial perspective, the strongest hook is the brothers’ disagreement. A family can share a history without sharing an interpretation of it. A loving memory does not automatically disprove a painful one, and a painful memory does not explain every part of another person’s experience.

That is an interpretation of the announced premise, rather than a judgment about the finished novel. But it gives readers a concrete reason to watch for the book beyond Reynolds’s name.

When Does Father, Father Come Out?

Father, Father is scheduled for June 1, 2027, through Scribner. The hardcover is currently listed at 208 pages, and ebook and unabridged audiobook editions are also listed.

Readers should check their preferred retailer for local availability and edition details.

Who Should Put It on Their Reading List?

Based on the synopsis, this looks especially relevant to readers drawn to family fiction about grief, estrangement, and the uneasy work of understanding a parent.

The road-trip setup is also promising. Travel can give characters somewhere to go while leaving them with nowhere easy to escape a difficult conversation.

Whether the novel fulfills that promise will have to wait until publication. For now, Father, Father belongs on the radar of readers who enjoy intimate stories in which the central mystery is how well family members really know one another.
