Love Bombing Vs. Genuine Interest: How To Know The Difference
Back in the day before I became a happily married woman and a dating coach, like many of you out there, I fell for love bombing.
Not because I was naive. Not because I didn’t know better. Because it worked on me the way it works on so many smart, self-aware, emotionally healthy singles. It felt like the chemistry I’d been waiting for. And it always, always fizzled around the three-month mark, right after they’d gotten their grip on me.
That’s the part nobody tells you about love bombing. Whether the person is even aware of it or not. The intensity isn’t a sign of how much they like you.
It’s a strategy for how quickly they can get you attached, invested, and compliant before you’ve had time to actually evaluate whether this is a good match. Once you’re hooked, the effort disappears. The pursuit was never about you… it was about the win.
So how do you actually tell the difference between someone who’s love bombing you and someone who genuinely, healthily likes you? Let’s break it down.
Love Bombing vs. Genuine Interest
Love bombing looks like: Grand gestures early: surprise gifts, dramatic declarations, planning your future together before you know their middle name.
Genuine interest looks like: Small, consistent gestures over time: remembering what you said last week, showing up when they say they will, checking in because they care and want to know how your day went.
Love bombing feels like: Being swept off your feet so fast you don’t have time to think.
Genuine interest feels like: Steady ground. You can think clearly. You’re not anxious, there’s no hot and cold behavior. They are consistent and transparent.
Love bombing gives you: ALL words. Big, beautiful, urgent words with no follow-through. “You’re amazing! Let’s plan a vacation together!” and when you ask about it, they say. “We’ll talk about it later, I’m too busy.”
Genuine interest gives you: Actions that match the words, sustained over weeks and months. Not just in the beginning, but especially after the beginning, once the newness wears off.
Love bombing wants: To meet your friends and family fast, to make it “official” fast, to move in fast, anything that locks the relationship in before you’ve had time to really evaluate it.
Genuine interest wants: To meet the people who matter to you eventually, and is fine letting that happen at a pace that makes sense, not a pace that rushes you past your own judgment.
Love bombing responds to a boundary with: Guilt, withdrawal, or a wounded “I guess you don’t feel the same way I do.”
Genuine interest responds to a boundary with: Respect and honors your boundary. They might even feel relief, because a secure person likes knowing where they stand.

4 Ways to Protect Yourself
I don’t want you to become guarded or cynical… that’s not the goal. The goal is to slow down enough to see clearly. Here’s what actually works:
1. Pay attention to why they compliment you.
Words are cheap and love bombers know it. If someone tells you you’re “the one” with nothing to back it up but the feeling itself, that’s all “words”. If someone tells you you’re “the one” and can actually point to why they feel that way, like the way you handled a hard conversation with your mom, the patience you had with a stranger, the way you kept a promise you didn’t have to keep.
That’s rooted in your character, not just the rush of a new connection. Genuine interest is specific. It’s paying attention to who you actually are, not just how good you make someone feel in the moment.
2. Get clear on your non-negotiables and values before you’re in it.
Sit down and get specific: What do you actually need in a partner? What are you not willing to compromise on? Do you need someone emotionally available? If so, define it. What does that look like? When you know this ahead of time, you come from a grounded place and screen against what you require to make you happy instead of getting swept off your feet and abandoning your boundaries to make someone like you.
3. Slow down the pace. You control the speed, not them.
This was the hardest lesson for me. I used to think that if I slowed things down, I’d lose the person. I thought the intensity was the relationship. It’s not. Someone who actually likes you will respect a pace that feels good to you. Someone who’s love bombing will push back, guilt you, or accuse you of “not being that into it.” That reaction alone tells you everything.
4. Give it 90 days before you decide this is real.
Not because you need to withhold your feelings for three months, feel what you feel. But before you make big decisions, before you fully hand over your heart, watch for consistency across the full experience of the relationship.
Does the effort in week one match the effort in week twelve? Do they show up the same way after a bad day as they did on the good ones? Ninety days is long enough for a pattern to reveal itself, and short enough that you haven’t lost years waiting to find out.
Real interest doesn’t need to convince you. It doesn’t need to move fast to be real. If it’s genuine, it can survive a slower pace. Actually, it gets stronger at a slower pace, because you’re both building a special bond that will outlast any performance.
