Bringing Generations Together Through Wellness
SUNSHINE, fresh air and meaningful conversations set the tone for a recent community wellness gathering at Taman Wawasan in Puchong, Selangor, where residents came together for a morning dedicated to health, connection and wellbeing.
The “Breakfast & Chill: Talk Stress Away in the Park” programme, organised by Sunway Sanctuary in collaboration with Sunway University’s Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences’ School of Psychology, transformed the park into a welcoming space where people of all ages could learn, socialise and prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing.
Supported by Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya (MBSJ), the Board of Counsellors Malaysia and RE: Life Mental Health Clinic, the event attracted older adults, families, students, healthcare professionals and residents, reflecting a growing interest in preventive healthcare, active ageing and holistic wellbeing.
More than just a health event, the programme created opportunities for people to connect. Participants joined talks, wellness activities and interactive sessions designed to encourage healthier lifestyles while strengthening community bonds.
The initiative also showcased the collaborative strength of the wider Sunway ecosystem, bringing together expertise in healthcare, education and community engagement. Sunway Sanctuary, Sunway Home Healthcare and Sunway University worked together to combine health education with practical wellness support.
For Sunway University students, particularly those from the School of Psychology, the event provided valuable hands-on experience beyond the classroom. By engaging directly
with residents, they gained a deeper insight into mental health advocacy and the role they can play in supporting community wellbeing.
“At Sunway Sanctuary, we believe that healthy ageing is nurtured through meaningful social connections, lifelong learning and proactive wellness,” said GM Doris Chin.
“Through our collaboration with Sunway University and community partners, we are proud to create opportunities for different generations to come together, learn from one another and build healthier communities.”
A highlight of the programme was a talk on stress management and sleep health by Dr Ng Chin Nee, medical lead of Community and Transitional Care at Sunway Home Healthcare. Participants also took part in wellness consultations, fitness activities and family-friendly engagement sessions promoting preventive care.
Certified physiotherapists conducted simple health assessments, including the one-minute sit-to-stand test and functional reach test, helping participants better understand their exercise capacity, balance, mobility and fall risk. Nutrition and lifestyle consultations also offered personalised advice on building healthier daily habits.
The programme further highlighted the value of intergenerational interaction. Older adults, students and young families shared experiences through activities designed to bring people together. A lively line dance session got participants moving, while the “Generations of Love” family painting activity encouraged creativity, conversation and shared memories across generations.
Wellness booths around the venue offered information on healthy ageing, family wellbeing, senior living and postnatal care, giving visitors access to resources tailored to different stages of life while encouraging a more proactive approach to health.
As communities increasingly shift their focus from treatment to prevention, initiatives such as “Breakfast & Chill” demonstrate how simple gatherings can make a meaningful difference. By combining education, healthcare expertise and community engagement in a relaxed outdoor setting, the programme showed that promoting healthier lifestyles can be both informative and enjoyable.
For participants, the programme was a reminder that wellbeing often begins with something simple — spending time together, sharing experiences and feeling connected to the community around us. — TMR
