[ca] Paid A Lower Rate For My Vacation Hours Than My Normal Pay Rate.

Location: California. So I work night shift at an auto manufacturer. When I was hired, I was told the base pay for my position was $25 an hour, but since I was working the night shift I get paid at a rate of $28 an hour.

Recently I used my vacation hours and took a week off work, but according to my recent paystub, my vacation hours were paid at the base $25 an hour instead of the normal $28 an hour for my shift, which means a $180 difference in my gross pay for this check.

When I went to my lead about this and asked if it was an error, he told me that our workplace always paid our vacation hours at the base pay and not at the night shift's rate, with only sick hours getting paid at the night shift's rate.

Now, it's worth noting that my position with the company is for the night shift. I'm not allowed to work overtime into the day shift hours or pick up extra days on the day shift, nor is anyone else on the night shift. There isn't a situation outside of using vacation hours where we get paid less than the $28/hr rate night shift employees have.

My question is if the company is legally able to pay us at a different rate than our normal shift pay? Like I've had to take sick days in the past that were paid at my normal rate of $28/hr, so I didn't even realize there was a difference in how our vacation and sick hours were paid out.
