[texas] My Ex Is Refusing To Return My Belongings Unless I Pay Them For “storage Fees”

Location: Texas

I moved out of my ex’s apartment about 6 weeks ago after we broke up. I took most of my stuff the same weekend, but I had to leave a few things behind because I only had one car trip available that day. It’s not anything huge, but it’s still mine: a monitor, some clothes, a small bookshelf, a box of kitchen items, and a few personal documents mixed in with old papers.

At first they said it was fine and that I could pick everything up “whenever we both had time.” I’ve texted multiple times asking for a date and time, and they kept delaying or ignoring me. Now they’re saying they won’t let me get anything unless I pay them $300 for “storage fees” because my stuff has been taking up space. We never had any agreement about storage fees, rent, or payment. They just made that up after the fact. They also said if I show up without paying, they’ll call the police and say I’m trespassing.

I’m not trying to start a fight or go into the apartment without permission. I just want my belongings back, especially the documents and monitor. Do I need to file in small claims court, ask police for a civil standby, or send some kind of written demand first? I have texts showing they admitted the items are mine and that they’re refusing to return them unless I pay. What is the best legal next step here?
