Here is my original post for those who want to read it.

Good evening folks of r/legaladvice. I just wanted to go ahead and provide some updates to everyone here on the current situation regarding the unauthorized toll charges.

  1. Since Friday afternoon, I have spent a total of 7 to 8 hours speaking with folks at ezpass va, enterprise, New Jersey toll authority, and New York toll authority. I have also sent various emails, but ultimately, no one wants to do anything, and everyone except for enterprise is blaming me for this mishap. They have said that I should have made sure that I removed the rental vehicle from my ezpass va account after I returned the rental vehicle, and that I am officially on the hook for $6.08 in tolls.

  2. Out of the 4 companies that I have spoken to, the only one that has really helped out the most is enterprise. They have provided the most guidance, and assured me that I have done absolutely wrong. They have told me who to contact, what to say, and have allowed me to record our conversations that way I am able to reference exactly what was said to the proper people. They have even agreed to hear a dispute from me since they know that I am not responsible for this mishap, and agree that someone in one of their rental vehicles that I had also used essentially stole money from me.

  3. I have also filed a dispute with ezpass va over the tolls, explaining everything in great detail, and as of this morning, I was denied the dispute. They sent me the customer agreement that outlined me being responsible for any and all toll transactions for any vehicle that was on my account.

  4. As suggested by a couple of redditors, including u/No_Championship_7080, I have contacted the state police and explained everything to them. They cannot do anything, and have told me that I need to contact any of the parties listed in number 1.

  5. Since companies seem to respond better to media pressure, I have attempted to reach out to a few local news agencies, including but not limited to Wavy TV 10, and WTKR News 3, and they have agreed to take a look at my story to see if they are able to do anything with it. No guarantees, but at least get it looked at.

  6. I know that I could probably contact one of my local state reps to try and get this resolved, but I want to try and get this handled without having to involve any of my local governments help first. If I am unable to get this resolved at my level, then I will contact one of my local reps and see how they can help out.

Finally, on a closing note, I do want to thank anyone and everyone who has commented with advice, or shared any and all personal experiences with situations similar to mine. It is good to know that I am not alone in this scenario. I know that $6.08 is such a trivial amount to fret over, and some folks are probably thinking that I should just let it go. Trust me, if it were truly my fuck up, I would wholeheartedly take the loss and not care. However, I know that I am not responsible for this, and it's the principal of the situation that matters the most. I can't just let someone I do not know take free toll trips using my money that I put onto my account.

Thank you all again for any and all advice. Once I have more information, I will provide another update.
