Renter Called An Ac Repair Company Unbeknownst To Landlord And Never Paid The Company. Location: Ny

Location: NY.

A close family member rented their extra house to a family friend's child and their significant other. The AC unit was having issues and freezing up so my family member had their trusted contractor going out to fix it in two days. This was not fast enough for the tenants and they themselves called a different company who went out within one day. The tenants called my family member and said that they handled the situation but provided no other information. The assumption was that the tenants paid for it (this was a family friend so it never dawned that they would be untrustworthy). Tenants broke up and moved out of the house relatively soon after and nothing was brought up about it again from them. Flash forward to now (about two years), my family member is getting letters and legal action threats from a collection company saying the debt was never paid to the repair company.

Is my family member liable for the debt even though they never authorized any repairs, nor signed any contract with the company that the tenants called?
