A Minor Took My Car Without Permission And Crashed It. Need Advice

Card image cap

[Location: CA] Back in May, my 17yo daughter borrowed my car (with permission) to go study at Starbucks. A boy she knows (17) showed up and was begging to drive my car, she repeatedly said no. He took the keys from her backpack, took the car out, and ended up crashing it. It was determined to be totaled. An important point is that I did not report the car as stolen; I noted that the boy did not have permission to drive my car but honestly I was just so relieved that nobody was killed in this accident I didn’t want further trouble for anybody at the time. The boy and his father promised to repay anything the insurance didn’t pay.
I received a $20k payout for the car, but I owed $30k so I still have a $10k balance. The dad has now essentially ghosted me. I have prepaid legal through my work benefits and had a lawyer draft up and send a certified letter, but the deadline for them to provide even just a plan for repayment has passed and we heard nothing. (And the lawyer had said he’s getting pennies for this so doesnt plan to do anything else)
I know I can take them to Small Claims court but do I have any other course of action that I could/should do? I’m not trying to come out ahead here, as it is I have been without a car now for almost 5 months, and my insurance is going to go up significantly over the next three years. But I just want to pay off the remaining balance of a car loan for a car that I no longer even have…
