Asked For "engaged To Be Married" Status By Hr

Card image cap

Location: New York

I (female) work in NYC and engaged to another employee (male peer, no conflict of interest in terms of job responsibilities or their promotion, salary etc) who works out of the Australian headquarters. This is a long distance relationship for now and hoping to be together in 1-2 years. We disclosed our relationship to our boss and other peers, HR in Australia etc in June last year. So far, it has been going great with no issues. However, the HR Business Partner for NY met with my boss who was visiting NY last week about our relationship. The specific question was whether we are "engaged to be married". When my boss asked this question to me, I was shocked but still politely responded with "we are committed, engaged and have an intention to marry but not set a date yet". My partner has not been asked this question by anyone in Australia. So I assumed that different laws may apply in different jurisdictions but another colleague said this is not legal and why was this question asked only of a female employee. Can someone confirm if this is legal ask by the HR in NY?
