Barber Posted A Video About Me After I Left A 1-star Google Review, Got My Family Doxxed, And Made Me Record An Apology Video Before He'd Take It Down. What Can I Do? (california)

Hi everyone, I'm looking for advice on whether I have any way to protect myself after a barber retaliated against my review. I'm in California.

I went to a barbershop for a haircut twice. Same haircut, but I was charged two different prices. I thought the pricing was non-transparent, so I asked why. First he said prices are different on weekdays vs. weekends — but my first visit was also on a weekend, so that didn't add up. Then he said the first time he was renting a chair in the shop and setting his own price, and later he became an employee, so the shop sets the price now.

By that point I had lost trust in him and didn't want to keep hearing explanations, but he kept calling me. I blocked his number and left a 1-star review on Google Maps.

Then he retaliated. He posted a video twisting what happened, and people online dug up my social media photos and smeared me. My family's photos were also posted. It caused a lot of distress.

I repeatedly asked him to delete the video. Instead, he gave me a list of demands: apologize to him, get the boss's forgiveness, and record an apology video. I didn't want strangers to keep digging into my private life, and my family's photos were already out there, so I did everything he asked. Even then, he said my apology wasn't good enough and kept delaying deleting the video.

In the end, I called the boss directly, and I believe the boss told him to take it down. Only then was the video finally deleted. The whole apology ordeal lasted about two hours.

I don't think I should have been treated this way. I only agreed to his conditions because I wanted the video gone as fast as possible to stop further harm to me and my family — not because I believed I did anything wrong.

Some background: I have a small following online, and he knew that. His video framed it as "an influencer deliberately giving them a bad review." But I never posted anything about the salon from my own account. The only thing I ever posted was the Google Maps review, as a regular customer. He keeps pushing the narrative that I'm an influencer bullying him.

My questions:
1. Is this kind of retaliation against a review illegal? What agencies or channels can I report this to?
2. He still has the apology video, and my photos could be reposted. Is there anything I can do to prevent that?
3. I'm torn about pursuing this at all, because I'm afraid that if he finds out I complained, he'll post another video and start the doxxing all over again. Is there a way to report anonymously or protect myself while doing it?
