Bought Stolen Car Unknowingly

I purchased a used vehicle from a private seller in California , believing everything was legitimate. I successfully registered it through the DMV and received a title and license plates without any issues.
Later, I discovered that the vehicle had switched VIN numbers and was connected to a stolen-vehicle case. Law enforcement investigated and ultimately confiscated the vehicle.
Afterward, I contacted a company involved in the vehicle’s previous history and learned that the seller had already received reimbursement. When I confronted the seller, they offered only a partial refund, claiming financial difficulties and stating they would rather settle the matter in court.
I have proof of purchase, payment records, communications, and a recorded conversation with the seller.
I am now exploring my legal options to recover the money I lost, including the original purchase price and registration expenses, since I unknowingly purchased a stolen vehicle.
