Broke Up With Girlfriend Who I Lease An Apartment With. She Dosent Want To Pay Rent.

Location: Massachusetts United States

We rent an apartment together. We are both on the lease. We had a big fight and an ugly break up. She has parents to go back to live with. I do not. We pay rent evenly. Every month we switch off who pays last months rent. January was her month to pay. We did not break up till Feburary 7th. She lived here the entirety of Janurary.

We briefly discussed what she would be taking. Shes taking everything she brought and bought which is totally fair. I asked her if she would pay rent that she owed (as it was her turn) and she said no. I think that is not fair as she was in charge of the January rent and lived here for the entirety of January. I get we had a bad break up but she can not steal from me.

What can I do to protect myself in this situation? Im happy to let her get her things, but want her to pay January rent.

Im also a little scared cause she has a key to the place and may come for more than her stuff. Also some of the utility accounts were in her name. Any advice with those, can I get them transfered? Can I set up new accounts? Any advice in general is appreciated. Thanks
